# What to Expect at Your First Dragon Boat Session

27 October 2026 · Will Leung

## Why everyone is nervous the first time

Nearly every paddler who turns up to a first dragon boat session feels the same knot of nerves. Will I fall in? Am I fit enough? What if I slow everyone down? If that is you, you are in good company. Most of a DBX crew on any given day has never sat in a dragon boat before, and that is exactly who these sessions are built for.

We coach schoolchildren on their first paddle, corporate teams who have never been near open water, and Scouts working towards their activity badge, all in the same boats, with the same approach. The nerves look the same whatever the age or background, and so does the way they disappear.

Here is what actually happens, so you know what you are walking into.

## You start on dry land, not in the water

Every session opens with a briefing on the pontoon, not a scramble into the boat. A coach walks you through how to hold the paddle, how to get in and out safely, and what the calls from the drummer and the helm mean once you are moving. You get a life jacket fitted properly before you go anywhere near the water. None of this is rushed, because a crew that understands the basics on land paddles far better once afloat.

## You do not need to be fit, strong, or experienced

Dragon boat paddling is a team sport first and a fitness sport second. A boat of twenty paddlers moves on rhythm, not on any one person's power. New paddlers are mixed in among people who have done it before, so you are never the only beginner in the boat. The pace for a first session is set to let you find the stroke, not to test your fitness.

## The boat itself is more stable than people expect

The biggest fear first-timers mention is capsizing. In practice, dragon boats are wide, flat-bottomed, and stable, and sessions run in sheltered water, whether that is Royal Docks Watersports Centre, Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre at Canary Wharf, or Surrey Quays Watersports Centre. Falling in is rare. The coach's job is to keep the session calm enough that it stays that way.

## Your coach is watching you, not shouting at you

A good first session is about correction, not volume. Coaches are there to fix your grip, your reach, and your timing with the paddler in front of you, one small adjustment at a time. By the end of an hour, a boat of complete beginners is usually paddling in recognisable rhythm together, which is the moment nerves turn into grins.

## What you will actually feel afterwards

Most new paddlers are surprised by two things: how much their core and back worked, rather than just their arms, and how quickly the group pulls together. Dragon boating rewards teams that listen and adjust to each other, which is why it works so well for corporate days, club crews, and youth groups alike.

## Bring the right things, not a lot of things

You do not need your own kit. Clothes you can get wet in, a change for afterwards, and a willingness to get stuck in are enough. Everything else, paddle, boat, buoyancy aid, and a coach who has done this many times before, is provided.

## If you are bringing a group rather than coming alone

A lot of first sessions happen as part of something bigger: a corporate away day, a school or scout group, or a club putting together a crew for a race. The nerves in the room are often loudest among the organiser, not the paddlers, because they are the one who booked it. The structure does not change for a group booking. Everyone still starts on the pontoon with the same briefing, and the same coach keeps watching and correcting until the boat finds its rhythm.

## Ready to find out for yourself

The only way to stop being nervous about a first dragon boat session is to do one. Whether you are coming as part of a [corporate team day](https://dbx.events/corporate-crews) or want to bring a group along, get in touch and we will match you to a session.

**[Enquire about a first session with DBX](https://dbx.events/enquire)** and find out what all the nerves were about.
